In 1842 Harriet Jacobs escaped to the North by a boat. She was determined to reclaim her daughter from Sawyer, who had sent her to Brooklyn, New York to work as a house servant. It has been ten years since her escape from North Carolina, where Harriet Jacobs lived the extreme and uncertain life of a fugitive slave.
